Issues

The business community has many concerns and the Chamber of Commerce exists to help address these issues. The Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce focuses on local issues and works with our regional partners and the Maryland Chamber to influence state issues. National issues are addressed with the help of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).

Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce Position Statements

  1. Crime bas become a major concern recently as violence has grown in a few low income areas of the metropolitan core.  The Chamber's Crime Reduction Task Force is working closely with the law enforcement agencies to aggressively fight crime of all kinds in our area.
  2. The revitalization of the downtowns of some our region's municipalities is needed to support the continued economic health our towns and cities. Growth should be planned within the defined areas of Smart Growth as much as possible to help contain the cost of servicing the new developments while maintaining our rural character. The recent study of the downtown Salisbury neighborhood is important to the future of the entire community and needs to be implemented as soon as possible. Previous studies can provide the starting point for the future. Other areas have completed major revitalization projects such as Hebron, Princess Anne and Berlin, while other towns like Crisfield and Pocomoke City are still developing plans and projects to enhance their downtown areas.
  3. The poultry industry is vital the Eastern Shore economy and needs the support of the Maryland State government. The number of jobs tied to this industry makes it critical to analyze all actions that effect the industry to balance the impact.
  4. To handle the commuter jets of the 21st century, the Salisbury-Ocean City Wicomico County Regional Airport runway extension project is needed. The growing draw of Ocean City makes the future for commercial aviation bright, if the facilities are capable of handling the traffic.

The Maryland Chamber of Commerce's Chamber Action Network provides one voice for business. They track the activities of the Maryland Legislature and advocate for laws and regulations that will provide the best possible environment to conduct business in Maryland.
